Women in Ohio have been under consistent attack by the legislature and Governor for some time. This past year was no different.
As 538 Politics explained, “Since entering office in January 2011, John Kasich, Ohio’s governor and now a GOP presidential hopeful, has signed every abortion and women’s reproductive health provision that has landed on his desk. In four and a half years he has enacted 16 legislative proposals related to family planning funding and abortion access across the state.”
The chart below shows the damage he’s done in more detail.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio is committed to protecting access to safe and legal abortion in the state of Ohio.
As bad as the situation is currently, lawmakers in the Ohio General Assembly continue to introduce legislation that would close even more clinics. And they recently voted to defund Planned Parenthood entirely. The bill is just a signature away from becoming law.
Vox.com published an article detailing the damage the bill would have on Ohio’s public health system.
“The new proposal aims to “defund” Planned Parenthood in a very indirect way that leaves room for a lot of collateral damage. The bill doesn’t actually name Planned Parenthood, even though its sponsors made clear that Planned Parenthood is the target. Instead, the bill would deny various grants (more on those later) to any entity that “performs” or “promotes” abortion.
But the bill goes even further than that — it also denies funding for contracting or affiliating with an organization that promotes abortion. This is where things get messy.
Kelli Arthur Hykes, the director of public health policy at Columbus Public Health (CPH), told Vox this bill could effectively defund her local health department, which serves Ohio’s most populous city and its nearly 800,000 residents. CPH contracts or affiliates with organizations all the time that “perform” or “promote” abortion — not Planned Parenthood, but hospitals and insurance companies.”
The defunding bill would also strip Ohioans of many preventative health care services they receive at Planned Parenthood, such as breast and cervical cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, HIV testing and education programs.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio is a leading force in the fight to defend the right’s of Ohio’s women. We are working every day with our legislative allies, partner groups and community members to make sure that abortion remains a safe, legal and accessible service. We will continue to care: no matter what.
